Authorities in Saudi Arabia have intensified crowd management measures at the Masjid al-Haram, introducing regulated screening procedures at key entry points to control access for Umrah pilgrims and ensure orderly movement within the holy site ahead of the commencement of 2026 hajj.

Under the revised framework, only residents of Makkah are permitted to perform Umrah during the specified period.

Security personnel stationed at designated checkpoints now require individuals to present valid national identification before granting entry, effectively restricting access to non-residents.

Officials indicated that the policy forms part of a broader operational strategy aimed at mitigating congestion, particularly during peak periods when the influx of worshippers typically surges.

By limiting entry to a defined category of individuals, authorities are seeking to maintain a controlled environment that supports the safe and uninterrupted performance of religious rites.

According to officials, the deployment of screening points aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ongoing efforts to enhance crowd control systems around Islam’s holiest site.

The authorities noted that the measure is critical to preserving public safety standards, reducing overcrowding risks, and ensuring that pilgrims can observe their acts of worship in a calm and spiritually conducive atmosphere.

In addition, officials stressed that the initiative complements wider logistical and security arrangements currently in place across the city, including improved monitoring systems and coordinated movement plans within the mosque’s precincts.

Stakeholders have underscored that while the restrictions may limit access for some categories of visitors, the overarching objective remains to safeguard the welfare of worshippers and uphold the sanctity of the pilgrimage experience.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to continuously reviewing operational measures to respond effectively to evolving crowd dynamics.
