Hajj 2026: Saudi Authorities Lift Kaaba Cover in Swift Two-Hour Operation Ahead of Pilgrim Arrival

The General Authority for the Care of the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has concluded the annual elevation of the lower portion of the Kaaba’s covering, as part of preparations for the 2026 Hajj season.
Officials confirmed that the black silk drape, known as the Kiswa, was raised by about three metres in a carefully coordinated exercise designed to ready the holy site for the influx of pilgrims expected in the coming weeks.
A team of 34 trained technicians carried out the operation, completing the delicate task in roughly two hours. The process involved lifting the lower section of the covering and fastening a protective white cotton fabric, approximately two metres wide, around the entire base of the Kaaba.
Authorities explained that the routine adjustment is a preventive measure aimed at safeguarding the Kiswa from wear and tear, especially during periods of intense crowd movement when pilgrims perform Tawaf around the sacred structure.
The agency noted that strict safety procedures and professional standards were observed throughout the exercise, underscoring its commitment to preserving the sanctity and physical condition of Islam’s holiest site ahead of the annual pilgrimage.
