The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reaffirmed heightened health surveillance across the country’s airports following a confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a press release dated October 20, 2026, FAAN said it was working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), Port Health Services, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and other relevant agencies to support ongoing containment efforts.

The authority said it was maintaining heightened vigilance across airport operations and would continue coordinating with public health authorities to implement further measures considered necessary to protect passengers, airport personnel and the public.

Although FAAN did not specifically mention Umrah pilgrims or announce additional screening requirements for them, its statement underscores the importance of airport health surveillance for Nigerians travelling to and returning from Saudi Arabia.

Thousands of Nigerians undertake Umrah journeys, making international airport health procedures an important consideration for pilgrims, travel agents and tour operators.

FAAN said the early identification of the Ebola case and commencement of contact tracing highlighted the importance of established public health protocols, effective surveillance and cooperation among relevant agencies in responding to potential health threats.

The authority urged passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders to remain calm, vigilant and cooperative with health officials.

It also advised the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports.

For intending and returning Umrah pilgrims, the announcement does not indicate any new travel restrictions or special requirements specific to religious travel.

However, pilgrims should follow official health guidance, cooperate with airport health personnel and seek clarification from relevant authorities or their travel operators if they have questions about applicable travel procedures.

FAAN reaffirmed its readiness to work with relevant agencies to protect public health and ensure the safe operation of Nigeria’s airports.

The authority’s statement was signed by Henry Agbehibhe, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.
