Ramadan: Massive Turnout Complicates Worshipper Count at Masjid al-Haram on 27th Night

An unprecedented surge of worshippers at the Masjid al-Haram on the 27th night of Ramadan 2026 has complicated efforts by authorities to determine an accurate headcount.
During the special late night prayer millions converged on Islam’s holiest site for what is widely regarded as Laylat al-Qadr.
The Grand Mosque and its surrounding courtyards reached full capacity early in the evening, with worshippers extending into adjacent roads and public spaces more than a kilometre from the central complex.
According to officials, the scale and fluidity of the gathering, marked by continuous inflow and outflow of pilgrims made real-time enumeration increasingly difficult.
The authorities are still working and yet to release an official figure for this year’s turnout. However, analysts note that once crowds spill beyond controlled zones into open urban areas, attendance figures are typically derived through post-event data modelling rather than immediate counts.
These models combine surveillance feeds, entry-point data, and spatial density estimates to arrive at consolidated figures.
The development mirrors patterns observed in previous years. In 2025, Saudi authorities announced that more than 4.2 million worshippers attended prayers at the Grand Mosque on the 27th night of Ramadan.
That was believed to be one of the largest recorded congregations globally. The figure was confirmed only after extensive data reconciliation.
Security personnel and crowd management teams-maintained order throughout the night, deploying layered control measures to manage movement within and around the mosque precinct.
Despite the extreme density, operations remained largely coordinated, with no major incidents reported.
Religious significance continues to drive the massive turnout. The 27th night holds special importance for Muslims worldwide, believed by many to coincide with the Night of Decree, when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed.
While the final attendance figure for 2026 remains pending, early indicators suggest turnout levels comparable to or potentially exceeding previous records.
Authorities are expected to release official statistics after completing a comprehensive post-event assessment.
