The production of the Holy Kaaba’s Kiswah for the 1449 AH Islamic year, corresponding to 2027, has commenced at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswah in the Umm Al-Joud district of Makkah.

The development comes only days after authorities installed the Kiswah for 1448 AH on the Holy Kaaba at the Grand Mosque, marking the continuation of a centuries-old tradition that symbolizes the sanctity and significance of Islam’s holiest site.

Officials at the complex said work on each Kiswah requires up to 10 months of continuous effort by highly skilled Saudi artisans and specialists.

The production process engages nearly 200 professionals, including weavers, embroiderers, designers, technicians, and tailors, who work together to create the sacred covering.

Approximately 150 Saudi craftsmen dedicated 11 months to producing the recently installed 1448 AH Kiswah. Production for the next Kiswah begins almost immediately after each installation and continues until the start of the following Islamic year.

Here’s a more active version:

Artisans craft the Kiswah from approximately 670 kilograms of black-dyed natural silk and embroider it with Quranic verses using around 120 kilograms of 21-carat gold thread and about 100 kilograms of silver thread.

They then assemble 47 intricately embroidered silk pieces to create the complete covering. Once completed, the Kiswah weighs approximately 1,415 kilograms and comprises two layers.

The outer layer features black embroidered silk, while an off-white cotton lining provides additional support and durability.

Saudi authorities previously moved the annual replacement ceremony to 1 Muharram, the first day of the Islamic New Year, to enhance preservation and improve logistical arrangements.

Saudi authorities will install the newly commissioned 1449 AH Kiswah on the Holy Kaaba at the beginning of Muharram 1449, continuing a tradition that underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to serving the Two Holy Mosques and millions of worshippers and visitors.
