NAHCON Inaugurates 2026 Hajj Medical Team, Tightens Health Screening

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has inaugurated the Principal Officers Committee of the National Medical Team for the 2026 Hajj.
The move is to reinforce Nigeria’s health preparedness framework for the pilgrimage.
Speaking at the ceremony, NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, reaffirmed that pilgrim health and safety remain non-negotiable, in strict alignment with regulatory directives issued by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He emphasized that only intending pilgrims certified medically fit and free from designated illnesses would be cleared for travel.
The chairman mandated that all medical clearance certificates must bear the issuing doctor’s registration number with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
The chairman warned that Saudi authorities would conduct random verification checks at entry points.
He cautioned that any pilgrim found medically unfit upon arrival would face immediate repatriation, while officials implicated in negligence or misconduct would be sanctioned.
In a further tightening of procedures, NAHCON announced the introduction of an additional layer of health screening at designated departure centres across Nigeria.
The exercise will serve as a final verification stage before airlift to the Kingdom.
Head of the National Medical Team, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar, pledged full compliance with the Commission’s directives.
He outlined plans for rigorous pre-departure screening, enhanced accountability mechanisms, and the deployment of an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system to facilitate real-time monitoring and reporting throughout the Hajj operations.
Under its Terms of Reference, the Principal Officers Committee is tasked with providing overall leadership and coordination of medical services in line with NAHCON guidelines.
The committee will also develop operational strategies, supervise personnel deployment, ensure quality clinical care, strengthen disease surveillance and infection prevention protocols, coordinate emergency response and referrals, and manage pharmaceuticals, equipment, logistics, and staff welfare.
The committee is equally mandated to implement and maintain the EMR system to guarantee accurate data management, transparency, and adherence to professional and ethical standards.
The inauguration underscores NAHCON’s commitment to delivering a safe, compliant, and efficient Hajj 2026 for Nigerian pilgrims.
