NAHCON Debunks Airline Pullout Claims, FG Moves to Ease Jet Fuel Burden Ahead of 2026 Hajj

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has dismissed reports by some media organisations not including Hajj Gazette claiming that aviation fuel costs could force carriers to withdraw from the 2026 Hajj airlift, even as the Federal Government considers policy measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.
In a statement issued on Thursday by Fatima Sanda Usara, Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the commission said preparations for the pilgrimage remain firmly on track, with no indication of disruption from participating airlines.
NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the Federal Government is weighing a range of options to support Nigerian airlines, including those designated for Hajj operations, amid the surge in global aviation fuel prices.
According to him, engagements with stakeholders across the aviation sector are ongoing to ensure a smooth and efficient airlift of pilgrims.
He explained that discussions around logistics, particularly fuel supply and pricing, are routine in pre-Hajj planning and are being addressed through established coordination channels.
The chairman dismissed as inaccurate media reports claiming that some airlines were hesitant to participate due to high operational costs, describing such narratives as speculative.
“For the avoidance of doubt, all necessary arrangements are progressing as planned, and the inaugural flight for the 2026 Hajj exercise is scheduled for May 3, 2026,” he said.
Amb. Yusuf noted that government intervention is aimed at striking a balance between sustaining airline operations and shielding intending pilgrims from excessive travel costs.
He added that all contracted carriers have reaffirmed their readiness to deliver safe and efficient services throughout the exercise.
Despite prevailing economic challenges, the NAHCON boss expressed confidence that both outbound and return journeys for the 2026 Hajj would proceed without disruption.
He reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring a seamless pilgrimage, assuring that with continued government backing and stakeholder cooperation, Nigerian pilgrims will experience a hitch-free Hajj in 2026.
