NAHCON, ABU Launch MBA Programme in Hajj Operations Management

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Hajj Operations Management, marking a major step toward professionalising Hajj and Umrah administration in Nigeria.
The agreement was signed on Friday at the NAHCON headquarters in Abuja by the Commission’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, and Secretary to the Commission, Dr Mustapha Muhammad Ali. ABU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, signed on behalf of the university.
Speaking during the ceremony, Ambassador Yusuf described the partnership as a significant milestone in developing a skilled workforce for Nigeria’s Hajj and Umrah sector. He said the increasing complexity of pilgrimage operations demands professionals with specialised knowledge, practical expertise and a thorough understanding of the evolving industry.
According to him, the MBA programme will combine rigorous academic training with practical field experience to improve planning, coordination and service delivery for pilgrims.
Professor Ahmed said the initiative culminated nearly a decade of discussions and collaboration between both institutions. He noted that the programme would blend academic excellence with industry experience to equip participants with the competencies required to meet the changing demands of Hajj and Umrah administration.
The programme is a joint initiative of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria and the ABU Distance Learning Centre. It will admit officials of NAHCON, State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and Commissions, licensed Hajj and Umrah tour operators, professionals in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries, religious scholars, entrepreneurs and graduates seeking careers in pilgrimage management.
NAHCON said the pioneering programme would strengthen professional standards, improve services for pilgrims and position Nigeria as a global centre of excellence in Hajj education, training and research.
The Commission added that Ahmadu Bello University would announce admission requirements, application procedures and the programme’s commencement date in due course.
