The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced that its airspace will be closed to all inbound Hajj flights from May 21, as part of operational measures to ensure effective coordination ahead of the main pilgrimage rites.

The development comes as the 2026 Hajj arrival phase officially begins on April 18, corresponding to 1 Dhul Qi’dah 1447 AH.

The decision aligns with established protocols that stabilise in-country movement, manage crowd flow, and enable authorities to focus on logistics within key pilgrimage sites, particularly in Makkah and surrounding areas.

Prior to the closure, the Kingdom will begin receiving international pilgrims from April 18, with the first batch expected from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Indonesia.

The date also marks the full enforcement of entry restrictions into Makkah, a measure designed to regulate access to the holy city during the Hajj season.

For Nigeria, authorities will commence the airlift of intending pilgrims on May 3, providing an 18-day operational window to complete transportation ahead of the Saudi deadline

Industry observers note that the May 21 cut-off is critical, as it allows Saudi authorities to transition from international arrivals to internal coordination, including accommodation, transportation, and crowd management across the holy sites.

Hajj rites will begin around May 25, with millions of pilgrims already positioned at designated locations.

The structured timeline underscores Saudi Arabia’s continued emphasis on precision planning and strict adherence to schedules to ensure a seamless and incident-free Hajj operation.
