BREAKING: NAHCON Directs Airlines to Give 2 piece 23kg Luggage to 2026 states Pilgrims
In a major relief for intending pilgrims, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has directed all airlines approved for the 2026 Hajj airlift to allow Nigerian pilgrims two checked-in bags of 23 kilogrammes each, in addition to one 8 kg piece of hand luggage on their return journey.
Findings by the Hajj Gazette reveal that the directive is contained in the official letters of appointment issued to the airlines engaged for the 2026 Hajj operations. The instruction was conveyed in a letter dated December 23, 2025, and signed by the NAHCON Commissioner for Operations, Prince Anofiu Olarenwaju Elegushi, formally outlining the scope of engagement for the participating carriers.
End to the 32 kg Single-Bag Policy
The new arrangement marks a clear shift from the previous baggage policy, which allowed pilgrims only one checked-in bag of 32 kg and a single 8 kg piece of hand luggage. Under the 2026 guidelines issued by NAHCON, each pilgrim will now be entitled to two checked bags weighing 23 kg each and one piece of hand luggage not exceeding 8 kg. This effectively raises the total checked baggage allowance to 46 kg, excluding cabin baggage.
Alignment with Global Standards
By introducing the two-piece baggage policy, NAHCON is bringing Nigerian pilgrims in line with international aviation standards commonly enjoyed by pilgrims from other countries. The move is expected to address long-standing complaints from Nigerian pilgrims over restrictive luggage limits and unequal treatment, especially when compared with international pilgrims using the same airlines. Pilgrims travelling through the State Pilgrim Welfare Boards will now enjoy the same baggage privileges as privately sponsored and international pilgrims.
