Umrah 2026: Essential Travel Guide for Pilgrims Preparing for Makkah, Madinah

As preparations intensify for Umrah, intending pilgrims are advised to prioritize modest, breathable clothing and unscented personal care products in compliance with Ihram regulations.
According to Islamic Scholars, scented items are strictly prohibited while in the sacred state of Ihram.
Travelers are further encouraged to carry both digital and hard copies of their international passports and valid Umrah visas to facilitate seamless airport processing, hotel check-ins, and security screenings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Pilgrims undertaking Umrah in Makkah and Madinah should prepare for extended periods of walking and outdoor rituals by packing weather-appropriate, modest garments designed for comfort and durability.
Male pilgrims are required to wear Ihram consisting of two unstitched white cloths. Experts recommend packing at least two sets made from thick cotton or terry fabric to ensure absorbency and prevent transparency during excessive sweating.
Female pilgrims are advised to pack three to four lightweight abayas and four to five breathable hijabs, preferably cotton or jersey. Neutral colors such as black are recommended to maintain modesty and blend seamlessly within crowded worship environments.
Men are also encouraged to carry a secure Ihram belt or waist pouch to hold essential valuables, as the traditional Ihram garment does not include pockets.
Given seasonal temperature variations, particularly during winter months, pilgrims should include a light sweater or jacket to manage cooler evenings, especially in Madinah.
With daily walking distances often spanning several kilometers during Tawaf and Sa’i, appropriate footwear is critical. Men in Ihram must wear sandals that leave the ankles and upper foot exposed, in accordance with religious guidelines.
For non-Ihram periods, well-broken-in sneakers or orthopedic walking shoes are strongly recommended to prevent foot strain and injury.
A small drawstring shoe bag is considered essential for safely storing footwear within mosque premises to avoid loss. Additionally, blister patches or medical-grade foot tape are advised, as standard bandages may prove ineffective during prolonged rituals.
Compliance with Ihram rules requires the exclusive use of fragrance-free hygiene products. Pilgrims should procure unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant before departure to avoid non-compliance.
Sun protection is equally critical. A white folding umbrella and protective sunglasses can significantly reduce heat exposure under the intense Saudi climate.
Hydration remains a top priority. Pilgrims are encouraged to carry reusable water bottles for refilling with Zamzam water and supplement fluid intake with electrolyte sachets to mitigate dehydration risks.
To enhance spiritual engagement, pilgrims may carry a lightweight travel prayer mat for use in public spaces or on mosque marble floors.
A pocket-sized Qur’an and a Tasbeeh counter, whether digital or manual, can assist worshippers in maintaining focus during dhikr and Tawaf circuits.
For uninterrupted communication, a power bank with a minimum capacity of 10,000mAh and a universal Type G travel adapter are recommended. Purchasing a local Saudi SIM card upon arrival may also provide more reliable internet connectivity than hotel-based Wi-Fi services.
As Umrah traffic increases, proactive logistical planning remains central to ensuring a spiritually fulfilling and operationally smooth pilgrimage experience.
