Two Sokoto Pilgrims Die in Makkah After Completing Hajj

The Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency has announced the death two female pilgrims from the state in Makkah, after successfully completing the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
The State Deputy Amirul Hajj and Grand Khadi of Sokoto State, Alhaji Sodangi Acida, disclosed the development while speaking with journalists in Makkah.
According to a statement issued by the Head of Information and Communications of the agency, Faruku Umar, the deceased pilgrims were identified as Ladi Umar from Bodinga Local Government Area (LGA) and Hadiza Umar from Yabo LGA.
The Grand Khadi described the deaths as unfortunate and extended the condolences of the Sokoto State Government to the bereaved families. He prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the deceased and for the grant of Jannatul Firdaus.
Despite the losses, Sokoto State authorities said preparations for the return of pilgrims to Nigeria were progressing as scheduled.
Acida announced that the first batch of Sokoto pilgrims is expected to depart Saudi Arabia on June 14, 2026.
He explained that the return airlift would follow the “first to arrive, first to depart” principle, a system designed to ensure an orderly and efficient movement of pilgrims back to Nigeria.
The Deputy Amirul Hajj also urged pilgrims to comply with baggage regulations to avoid delays during departure procedures.
He reminded intending returnees that each pilgrim is permitted a maximum luggage weight of 32 kilograms per bag and advised them to adhere strictly to the approved limit.
Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar, expressed appreciation to the Sokoto State Government for its support throughout the Hajj exercise.
He specifically commended Governor Ahmad Aliyu for what he described as sustained commitment to the welfare of pilgrims during their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Umar also acknowledged the contributions of members of the state delegation, the agency’s board and staff, as well as the pilgrims themselves, noting that their cooperation played a significant role in the smooth conduct of the 2026 Hajj operations.
