Seven Suspected Boko Haram Commanders Arrested After Hajj

Nigerian security operatives arrested at least seven suspected Boko Haram commanders at Katsina Airport after they returned from the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, marking a major breakthrough in the country’s counterterrorism efforts.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed the development on Friday shortly after President Bola Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act, 2026, into law at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo said security operatives intercepted the suspects through Nigeria’s newly integrated digital identity and security verification system, which links the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and Interpol’s 24-hour global security network.
According to the minister, security operatives immediately transferred the suspects, who are also linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), to the Department of State Services (DSS) for interrogation and further investigation.
“Our integrated platform enabled security operatives to identify seven known Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders returning from Mecca at Katsina Airport last Thursday, arrest them, and hand them over to the DSS,” Tunji-Ojo said.

He noted that the government inherited a fragmented identity management system, with agencies operating separate databases, but said the new integrated platform now enables real-time identity verification and intelligence sharing across security institutions.
Tunji-Ojo described the newly enacted NIMC Act as a landmark reform designed to eliminate data silos, strengthen the integrity of the National Identity Number (NIN), and improve collaboration among security and intelligence agencies.
He added that the unified identity system would significantly enhance Nigeria’s capacity to detect and combat terrorism, identity fraud, financial crimes, and other transnational offences.
The minister also said the reforms now require authorities to verify applicants’ identities through the NIMC database in real time before processing or issuing any Nigerian passport.
