Saudi Authorities to Remove Kaaba Barriers Friday Following Kiswa Replacement

Saudi authorities will remove the temporary black protective barriers surrounding the Holy Kaaba on Friday morning, June 19, 2026, following the successful completion of this year’s Kiswa replacement ceremony.
The barriers were installed on the night of June 15 as part of preparations for the annual ritual and to ensure the safety of worshippers during maintenance activities around Islam’s holiest site.
The precautionary measure also helped secure the perimeter of the Kaaba while specialized teams carried out the ceremonial replacement of the Kiswa, the black silk cloth that covers the sacred structure.
Authorities completed the Kiswa replacement during the night of June 16, coinciding with the beginning of the new Islamic year, 1 Muharram 1448H.
The annual tradition marks one of the most significant maintenance operations at the Grand Mosque in Makkah and reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving the sanctity and appearance of the Holy Kaaba.
Following the replacement process, technical teams carried out post-ceremony inspections and adjustments to properly secure and align the newly installed Kiswa.
The temporary barriers remained in place throughout this period to facilitate the final stages of the operation without disruption from the large crowds of pilgrims and worshippers visiting the Grand Mosque.
Saudi authorities have now confirmed that the removal phase will begin after Fajr prayers on Friday morning, restoring full access and visibility around the Kaaba for worshippers.
The dismantling of the barriers marks the conclusion of the annual Kiswa-changing process, a centuries-old Islamic tradition observed with meticulous planning and coordination.
The operation forms part of broader efforts by Saudi authorities to manage crowd movement, maintain safety standards, and ensure the smooth conduct of religious activities at the Grand Mosque throughout the year.
