Saudi Arabia Reminds Umrah Visitors to Claim 15% VAT Refund Before Departure

Saudi Arabia has reminded Umrah visitors and other eligible international travelers to claim refunds on the Kingdom’s 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) before departing the country, as part of efforts to enhance the visitor experience and support the tourism sector.
The reminder comes amid increasing numbers of pilgrims and tourists arriving in the Kingdom for religious and leisure activities.
Under the VAT refund scheme, eligible non-resident visitors can recover taxes paid on qualifying goods purchased during their stay in Saudi Arabia.
Authorities said the refund applies to purchases made from approved retailers participating in the VAT refund program.
Visitors must retain their purchase receipts and complete the necessary refund procedures before departing Saudi Arabia through designated international airports, seaports, or border crossings.
The initiative encourages spending by international visitors while allowing them to benefit from tax relief on eligible purchases.
Saudi officials emphasized that travelers should verify that their purchases meet the program’s requirements and that all documentation is available before beginning the refund process.
Umrah pilgrims, who account for a significant share of international arrivals in the Kingdom, have been advised to familiarize themselves with the refund procedures to avoid missing the opportunity before their departure.
The VAT refund scheme forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to improve services for visitors and strengthen its position as a leading global destination for religious tourism.
