Saudi Arabia Begins Water Infrastructure Trials Ahead of 2027 Hajj
By Abdulrazaq Auwal
Saudi Arabia has commenced operational trials of water infrastructure at the holy sites as part of preparations for the 2027 (1448 AH) Hajj season.
The National Water Company (NWC) initiated the first operational tests to assess the readiness of water networks and related facilities ahead of the arrival of millions of pilgrims from across the world.
The exercise forms part of the Kingdom’s broader strategy of beginning Hajj preparations well ahead of the pilgrimage, with particular attention to critical infrastructure and essential services required during the peak days of Hajj.
Operators expect the early testing to help identify and address potential challenges in water distribution, pumping and storage before the pilgrimage begins.
The Kingdom is also strengthening its wider water infrastructure as it prepares for major water-sector initiatives in 2027.
Saudi Arabia is scheduled to host the 11th World Water Forum in Riyadh in March 2027, underscoring the increasing focus on water security and sustainable resource management.
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has separately accelerated preparations for 2027 Hajj, including the launch of a unified digital contracting package for international pilgrims.

Under the new system, foreign Hajj affairs offices and agencies can contract electronically through the Masar platform for an integrated package covering holy-site services, accommodation in Makkah and Madinah, transportation and catering.
The ministry described the package as part of its early preparations for the 1448 AH season and efforts to improve coordination among the various entities involved in serving pilgrims.
Saudi Arabia has increasingly adopted early operational planning and digital systems to improve the management of Hajj services.
Its integrated Masar Nusuk platform connects contracting, operational activities, pilgrim data and visa procedures within a unified digital infrastructure.
The water trials therefore represent another layer of the Kingdom’s preparations, focusing on ensuring that one of the most critical services for pilgrims remains reliable during the intense demand of the Hajj period.
The NWC’s early testing and readiness measures at the holy sites will give operators enough time to assess infrastructure performance and make any necessary adjustments before the 2027 Hajj.
