Pilgrims Advised to Confirm Zamzam Transport Rules Before Departure

Hajj and Umrah pilgrims have been urged to verify airline regulations regarding the transportation of Zamzam water before departing Saudi Arabia, as authorities continue to enforce restrictions on excess quantities carried by passengers.
Travel advisers and airport officials have cautioned that pilgrims attempting to transport more than the standard five-liter allocation of Zamzam water may face difficulties during check-in and baggage screening processes if they fail to comply with airline policies.
The advisory follows reports that airport personnel have removed unauthorized containers of Zamzam water discovered in checked luggage, particularly when the quantity exceeds the allowance approved by airlines.
Such incidents have occasionally resulted in delays for passengers and additional screening procedures at airports.
Zamzam water, which holds significant religious importance for Muslims, is commonly taken home by pilgrims returning from Makkah and Madinah.
To facilitate its transportation, airlines operating Hajj and Umrah flights typically provide specific guidelines on packaging, weight limits and permitted quantities.
Officials emphasized that while many carriers allow pilgrims to carry a designated five-liter container of Zamzam water, regulations may differ depending on the airline, destination and type of ticket purchased. Passengers were therefore advised to seek clarification directly from their airlines before travelling.
Industry stakeholders noted that compliance with baggage regulations helps ensure smoother airport operations and reduces the likelihood of confiscation of items that do not meet transport requirements.
Pilgrims were also encouraged to package Zamzam water according to airline instructions and avoid placing additional containers inside regular checked baggage unless explicitly permitted by the carrier.
The advisory comes as large numbers of Umrah pilgrims continue to travel through Saudi Arabia’s airports following the conclusion of the 2026 Hajj season.
Authorities said early verification of airline requirements would help pilgrims avoid inconvenience, minimize travel disruptions and ensure a smoother journey back to their home countries with their permitted Zamzam water allocation.
