Egyptian Christian Enters Qur’an Contest, Wins Umrah for Muslim Neighbour

An Egyptian Christian man, Mina Yusuf, has won an Umrah trip in an online Qur’an-based Islamic competition and gifted the prize to his Muslim neighbour, fulfilling her long-standing dream of visiting the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.
Yusuf, a 31-year-old accountant, reportedly entered the religious competition after learning that his neighbour, Mona Mokhtar, popularly known as Um Ali, had always wished to perform Umrah but had been unable to make the journey.
Rather than keeping the prize for himself, Yusuf decided to participate with the intention of securing the Umrah opportunity for his neighbour.
Egyptian media reports said Yusuf submitted answers repeatedly during the competition, with some reports putting the number of attempts at between 50 and 60, before eventually emerging as the winner.
When he secured the Umrah prize, Yusuf arranged for it to be given to Um Ali, who reportedly became emotional after learning that her neighbour had gone through the competition specifically to help make her dream possible.

The story has attracted widespread attention in Egypt, with several media organisations reporting interviews and accounts from those involved.
Yusuf and Um Ali’s families have reportedly lived next to each other for about two decades, making their relationship an example of the longstanding social bonds that can develop between neighbours regardless of religious differences.
The competition was reportedly organised through the social-media platform of Islamic scholar Dr Ayman Abu Omar, with an Umrah trip offered among the prizes through a tourism company.
The incident has since generated considerable public interest, particularly because Yusuf, a Christian, participated in a Qur’an-focused religious competition and chose to transfer his prize to a Muslim neighbour.
Beyond the religious dimension, the gesture highlights the potential of neighbourly relationships to transcend differences and create acts of compassion with lasting personal significance.
For Um Ali, the unexpected gift could turn a long-held spiritual aspiration into reality, while Yusuf’s gesture has become a widely shared example of interfaith friendship and generosity in Egypt.
