Friday Sermon: Makkah Imam Condemns Attacks, Extremism

By Abdulrazaq Auwal

The Imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Sheikh Dr. Faisal Ghazawi, has condemned attacks on Muslim lands, the terrorising of peaceful populations and the killing of innocent people, warning against extremism and acts of aggression.

Ghazawi, who delivered Friday’s sermon at Masjid al-Haram, described attacks on Muslim territories and violations against innocent people as grave acts of injustice and transgression.

He also denounced extremist groups and individuals who adopt violent interpretations of Islam, particularly those who declare fellow Muslims unbelievers without divine justification and use such claims to legitimise bloodshed.

The imam warned that unjustly spilling blood, seizing people’s property and spreading corruption constitute serious violations of Islamic teachings.

He further criticised those who act with arrogance, betrayal and treachery, stressing the need for Muslims to uphold justice, protect human life and reject conduct that fuels conflict and division.

Ghazawi’s sermon placed particular emphasis on the dangers of extremist ideologies that distort religious teachings and turn differences among Muslims into grounds for violence and persecution.

He urged worshippers to reject such approaches and adhere to the principles of Islam, which require respect for human life, justice and responsible conduct.

The sermon came as the Friday congregation gathered at the Grand Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, where religious messages delivered from the pulpit often address matters of faith, morality and the conduct expected of Muslims.

At the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Al-Bu’ayjan also used his Friday sermon to emphasise the importance of faith, worship and good character.

Al-Bu’ayjan reminded worshippers that sincere faith should be reflected in practical acts of worship and in the way Muslims treat other people.

He urged Muslims to remain consistent in their religious commitments and steadfast in righteous conduct, stressing that faith requires continued mindfulness, obedience and good deeds.

The Madinah sermon further highlighted integrity, kindness and sound moral conduct as essential expressions of genuine faith.

Together, the sermons from the two holy mosques emphasised the responsibilities of Muslims to maintain their relationship with Allah while upholding justice, good character and peaceful relations with others.
