With the deadline for 2026 Hajj visa issuance approaching, thousands of intending pilgrims from across Nigeria are making final preparations for the sacred journey to Makkah.

Travel experts and Hajj officials say proper preparation, especially packing the right items is critical for Nigerian pilgrims who will spend several days performing rites across the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

The pilgrimage involves long hours of walking, exposure to high temperatures and large crowds, making it important for pilgrims to travel with only essential items that will make the journey easier.

Essentials for Women Pilgrims

Women pilgrims are advised to pack lightweight clothing suitable for the hot weather in Saudi Arabia.

Breathable abayas are recommended for daily use, while cotton inner clothing can help keep the body cool during long hours of movement.

Pilgrims are also advised to carry several hijabs to maintain hygiene throughout the pilgrimage.

Comfortable footwear such as rubber sandals or crocs is considered essential, particularly around ablution areas where surfaces may be wet. Slippers are also useful for movement within hotels and camps.

Women are further encouraged to carry adequate sanitary supplies from Nigeria and consult medical professionals before travel if they intend to manage their menstrual cycle during the Hajj rites.

Security of personal items is also important. Experts recommend using waist or cross-body pouches to safely store passports, identification cards and money.

Essentials for Men Pilgrims

Male pilgrims are advised to travel with at least two sets of Ihram garments, as the clothing may become dirty during the physically demanding rites.

Anti-chafing creams or petroleum jelly can help prevent skin irritation caused by long walking distances between the ritual sites.

Men performing Hajj are required to wear sandals that do not cover the top of the foot while in the state of Ihram. Comfortable sneakers may also be useful for travel days or periods when the pilgrim is not in Ihram.

Other recommended items include an Ihram belt for securing the garment and storing small valuables, as well as light casual clothing and thobes for use in hotels and during prayers.

Pilgrims are also encouraged to carry a small backpack or carry-on bag for their stay in Mina during the core days of the Hajj rites.

Additional Items for All Pilgrims

Health experts also recommend that pilgrims carry a basic medical kit containing pain relievers, bandages and prescribed medications.

Other useful items include reusable water bottles for hydration, unscented wipes suitable for use during Ihram, power banks for mobile phones and small prayer mats for use in crowded areas.

Face masks and hand sanitizers are also advised due to the large crowds that gather annually for the pilgrimage.

As Nigerian pilgrims finalise their travel arrangements, officials say careful preparation and disciplined packing will help ensure a safer and more comfortable Hajj experience.
