2026 Hajj: Edo Board Admits Lapses, Moves to Enforce Stricter Compliance Measures

The Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board has acknowledged operational lapses in its 2026 Hajj preparations, pledging to implement stricter compliance measures for future exercises.
The stated that the measures being introduced followed the 2026 challenges that led to the exclusion of several intending pilgrims.
Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Eranga Abdulkabir Muhammadkabir, made the admission while interacting with Hajj Gazette.
He noted that both the state officials and pilgrims share responsibility for the setbacks recorded during the registration process.
According to him, the experience has exposed entrenched assumptions within the system, particularly the expectation of deadline extensions which ultimately worked against many intending pilgrims in the state.
He said, “This is a lesson not only for the pilgrims but also for us as officials. The mindset that there will always be an extension has come to an end”.
Muhammadkabir identified late payments, incomplete documentation, and delayed submission of international passports as major factors that prevented some applicants from securing placement within the state’s allocated slots.
He disclosed that in several cases, individuals made partial payments or transferred funds without completing mandatory documentation, assuming the process would remain flexible as in previous years.
“Some people paid and relaxed without submitting their passport data pages. Others delayed completing their payments, believing there would still be time. Unfortunately, the system has changed,” he explained.
He emphasized that future Hajj operations will be governed by stricter enforcement protocols, including a policy that ties payment validation to immediate submission of required documents.

“Going forward, once you make payment, you must submit your international passport or data page. Without that, no receipt will be issued. We will not operate under assumptions anymore,” he stated.
The Executive Secretary further revealed that the Board would intensify early sensitization campaigns immediately after the 2026 Hajj to reorient intending pilgrims on evolving requirements and timelines.
“We will begin massive sensitization as soon as we return from Hajj, even before the next payment window opens. People must understand that timelines will be strictly enforced,” he added.
The development reflects a shift in Hajj administration, as Nigerian state boards align with increasingly rigid timelines and digital processes introduced by Saudi authorities, leaving little room for last-minute adjustments.
The Edo Board maintained that the reforms are necessary to ensure a more disciplined, transparent, and efficient Hajj operation in subsequent years.
