Bauchi Governor Calls for Review of Electoral Timetable Over Hajj Season Overlap

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has called on Nigeria’s electoral authorities and relevant federal institutions to take into account the Hajj pilgrimage calendar when scheduling major political activities, warning that the current alignment creates avoidable conflict for Muslim faithful.
The governor made the appeal during his farewell address to intending pilgrims departing for the 2026 Hajj exercise from Bauchi State, where he expressed concern that the timing of political party primaries and other electoral engagements often coincides with the pilgrimage period.
He noted that the overlap places significant pressure on citizens expected to fulfil both civic and religious obligations, describing the situation as sensitive and impractical given the large number of Nigerians who participate in Hajj each year.
Governor Bala Mohammed urged the Presidency, the National Assembly, and electoral management authorities to consider scheduling adjustments or introduce special provisions to accommodate pilgrims and prevent them from facing disenfranchisement or operational challenges during key electoral activities.
He stressed that the appeal was not politically motivated but rooted in fairness, inclusivity, and respect for religious obligations, particularly within the Muslim community.
According to him, Nigeria’s democratic planning frameworks must reflect the country’s religious diversity and seasonal realities to prevent recurring clashes between national elections and major religious events.
The governor reaffirmed his commitment to supporting intending pilgrims from Bauchi State and wished them a safe and successful pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
